New: what governed autonomous procurement actually means

Consumer electronics: how it works and what to require

In short

Consumer electronics procurement runs on short product cycles, volatile component availability and constant supplier change. Proconomy governs approved-source control, material documentation and change notification while agents run the sourcing coordination, so commercial decisions are made quickly with the supplier and compliance context attached.

The window is always short. The qualification queue is not.

Volatility is not the problem. Finding out late is the problem.

Component lifecycle

  • Product change notifications on a live component
  • End-of-life notices with a last-time-buy window
  • Alternate source qualification under time pressure
  • Bridge orders against the availability window
  • Allocation and shortage management
  • Substitution requests from a buyer under pressure

Compliance documentation

  • RoHS and REACH declarations with expiry
  • Substance declarations mapped to components
  • Conflict minerals reporting
  • Country-of-origin documentation
  • Supplier declarations approaching lapse
  • Evidence assembled for a market shipment

Multi-SKU exposure

  • Every product using an affected component
  • Entity-level exposure across a group
  • Inventory position against a change date
  • Alternate qualification status per SKU
  • Cost impact of a substitution
  • Launch dates affected by a component change

Supply base

  • Contract manufacturer coordination
  • Distributor versus direct supply decisions
  • Regional supply for regional markets
  • Capacity commitments across product families
  • New supplier qualification under speed pressure
  • Concentration on a single component source

Six mechanisms. PCN to qualified alternate.

Including exposure across every product using the component, from connected data.

MechanismWhat it has to do
PCN and EOL routingProduct change and end-of-life notifications enter a governed workflow with an owner and a deadline, rather than sitting in one engineer's inbox.
Component-to-product exposureEvery product, SKU and entity using an affected component identified from connected part data rather than a maintained spreadsheet.
Declaration currency managementMaterial and substance declarations carry expiry dates and are chased from the supplier before they lapse.
Parallel alternate qualificationAlternate source qualification runs alongside the commercial conversation rather than starting after it, which is what makes the last-time-buy window achievable.
Approved-source enforcementA substitution cannot reach the line from a source that has not cleared the entity, however urgent the allocation pressure.
Change assessed before effectSupplier changes are routed for assessment before they take effect rather than surfacing at the next build.

A description of what the practice requires, not a feature list.

What to make any vendor demonstrate

  1. Enter a PCN for a component used in several products and see what surfaces.
  2. Ask what happens on the day a substance declaration expires.
  3. Show an unapproved substitution being blocked under simulated allocation pressure.
  4. Ask how alternate qualification runs in parallel with the last-time-buy window.
  5. Request the compliance evidence pack for a shipment as a customer would.

Definitions. Asked and answered.

It governs the procurement response: routing the notification for assessment, opening alternate sourcing with eligible suppliers and coordinating responses. Availability forecasting and market intelligence remain your own, and Proconomy does not claim to supply component market data.

As configurable document requirements with validity tracking, collected through the supplier portal and chased before they expire. Whether the evidence satisfies a regulatory obligation is a judgement your compliance team makes.

Approved-source rules applied at sourcing and at purchase. A substitution outside the approved list requires an authorised exception, and the decision is recorded against the component.

Event setup from a category template and automatic eligibility-based invitation remove most of the elapsed time. Agents follow up across time zones without a buyer scheduling reminders.

Affected-item mapping uses connected part data, so a change notification shows every product and entity using the component rather than the one the notice happened to mention.

A PCN is a supplier's formal notice that a component is changing — materials, process, site or specification. Its significance depends entirely on which products use the component, which is why routing it to one engineer's inbox is the common failure.

A last-time-buy is the final opportunity to purchase a component before it goes end-of-life. It creates a fixed window in which an alternate must be qualified or sufficient inventory secured, and the window is rarely long enough for a sequential qualification process.

RoHS restricts hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment; REACH governs the registration and authorisation of chemical substances in the EU. Both depend on current supplier declarations, which is a document-currency problem as much as a technical one.

See it on your own workflow. Not a prepared scenario.

Reference material explains the model. A demonstration on one of your own processes is what settles the internal argument.
